We were joined on June 28, 2021 by Alexi Robichaux of BetterUp who provided a very insightful conversation.
The last time Alexi presented to the Rotary Club of Anaheim was when we were meeting in the Diamond Club of Angel’s Stadium. At the time he was a high-school sophomore and received lots of incredible support from Anaheim Rotary members. Our own Bruce Solari and Steve Sain took him to lunch as a young man and gave him encouragement for his ideas.
Alexi grew up in Dallas before moving to California, attended USC. He lived both in the San Francisco and Orange County areas. Recently, he has moved back to Austin, Texas, from where he was attending the meeting. Before starting BetterUp, he was with the Youth Leadership of Anaheim (YLA) which focused on assisting inner-city children. Since starting BetterUp, Alexi is the youngest CEO of a tech company.
The mission of BetterUp is to unlock greater purpose potential and passion. It is the world’s largest mobile coaching company, which coaches in leadership development and life skills and has 350 employees all over the country. They are currently seeking 250 more people for employment.
“Since 2013 we have been pioneering growth for the whole person. We believe that well-being and peak performance go hand-in-hand. And that through custom support and strengthening mental fitness, you unleash personal and professional potential. The BetterUp experience brings together world-class coaching, AI technology, and behavioral science experts to deliver change at scale — improving individual resilience, adaptability, and effectiveness. The results? People living more meaningful, vibrant lives with greater clarity, purpose, and passion.”
BetterUp works by upholding the values of Courage, dare often and greatly, Craftspersonship, which seeks to find meaning in what we do through crafting excellence, and Playfulness, in which great ideas come from health and happiness. Other values include Grit, having the perseverance driven by determination and passion; Empathy where innovation starts with understanding, and finally, Zest, what sets you apart and helps you discover the cleaner feeling of Zest which leaves you feeling your best.
Alexi stated that even if a venture fails, you still win. Do things that do scale, learn about what people want and do not want and expand. Courage is all about making a difference. He stated that his biggest mistake was fooling himself into thinking that his career could not be a passion. Focus on what gives you joy instead of what brings you money.
Thank you, Alexi! You are a true inspiration to us all, young, and old alike! Paul Andresen was honored you were the last guest at his last official meeting as President of the Rotary Club of Anaheim!
